A Day in the Life of an Apprentice
I’m Georgia and I am an apprentice Patient Choice Facilitator based at Windsor House, Plymouth. I joined the service in January 2019 and haven’t looked back since! Before I started with the NHS, I worked as a shift manager for Domino’s Pizza so this role was a completely new challenge.
My job role is incredibly varied and interesting and over this year I have read thousands of letters and spoke to hundreds of patients before directing them to the most appropriate service.
Through this, I have learnt about referral management, a ton of medical terminology and about conditions that I didn’t even know existed. I have also learnt how to adapt myself to cater to each individual patient I interact with to ensure their needs are met.
As an apprentice, I gain a Level 3 NVQ qualification while working which is equivalent to 3 A Levels. I have also gained my Level 2 in Functional Skills IT as this is a requirement for the apprenticeship programme. Through this, I met a lot of people from several different organisations and made a friend for life who works with other base in Newton Abbot!
This role has given me a multitude of opportunities such as attending meetings with head commissioners of the CCG, visiting hospitals around the county where we provide care and developing my own skill set including using and adapting spreadsheets, having conversations with patients, communicating with a variety of organisations and prioritising tasks.
I’ve met the most supportive and encouraging group of people ever through the service and I would be completely lost without my colleagues! Working with the NHS opens so many doors and has endless opportunities to start a successful career path. It’s an extremely enjoyable job and a lovely organisation to work for.
